Vertigo is a sensation of spinning or movement. It is a symptom, with causes including inner-ear disorders and migraine.
Episodes can be brief or prolonged. Some are triggered by head movement; others occur with nausea, hearing symptoms or imbalance.
Assessment considers triggers, duration, examination and sometimes positional tests. Additional investigations are selected according to findings.
Management depends on the cause. Some positional disorders respond to repositioning manoeuvres performed after assessment; other conditions need a different approach.
Bring previous prescriptions, investigation reports and your current medication list. Write down when symptoms began and how they affect your daily life. Ask which changes to monitor and when to return for review.
New speech difficulty, limb weakness, double vision or severe inability to walk with dizziness requires emergency assessment.
