Trigeminal neuralgia

Prepare for a conversation with Dr Anup Bende at Shriji Polyclinic.

UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITION

Trigeminal neuralgia

Trigeminal neuralgia causes episodes of facial pain associated with the trigeminal nerve. Dental and other facial conditions can cause similar pain.

Symptoms to discuss

Brief, severe, shock-like pain usually affects one side of the face. Touch, chewing or brushing teeth may trigger attacks.

How assessment works

Assessment reviews the pain pattern and examines the face. Brain imaging may help investigate an underlying cause.

Treatment approaches

Specific medicines may reduce attacks. Persistent symptoms or medicine intolerance can lead to specialist discussion of other options.

Prepare for your review

Bring previous prescriptions, investigation reports and your current medication list. Write down when symptoms began and how they affect your daily life. Ask which changes to monitor and when to return for review.

When to seek prompt help

Arrange assessment for recurring severe facial pain. New weakness or other sudden neurological symptoms need urgent attention.
