NEUROLOGY · CONSULTATION GUIDE

Numbness & nerve symptoms

Prepare for a conversation with Dr Anup Bende at Shriji Polyclinic.

UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITION

Peripheral neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy affects nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Causes vary and may include diabetes, nutritional problems or other illnesses.

Symptoms to discuss

Tingling, burning pain, reduced sensation, weakness or poor balance may occur, often starting in the feet or hands.

How assessment works

Assessment may include neurological examination, blood tests and nerve conduction studies. NCV helps evaluate certain nerve problems but is not required for every symptom.

Treatment approaches

Care addresses the underlying cause where possible, symptom relief and protection of areas with reduced sensation. Management depends on the type of neuropathy.

Prepare for your review

Bring previous prescriptions, investigation reports and your current medication list. Write down when symptoms began and how they affect your daily life. Ask which changes to monitor and when to return for review.

When to seek prompt help

Rapidly worsening weakness, difficulty breathing or a sudden inability to walk needs urgent medical attention.
