Epilepsy & seizures

Prepare for a conversation with Dr Anup Bende at Shriji Polyclinic.

UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITION

Epilepsy & seizures

Epilepsy involves a tendency to have seizures. One seizure does not always mean epilepsy; other causes must be considered.

Symptoms to discuss

Seizures may cause shaking, staring, loss of awareness, unusual sensations or brief jerks. Symptoms differ between seizure types.

How assessment works

A witness account is helpful. Assessment may include EEG, blood tests and brain imaging; results are interpreted with the episode history.

Treatment approaches

Anti-seizure medicines are chosen individually. Follow-up includes safety, medication effects and pregnancy planning where relevant. Do not stop prescribed treatment without medical advice.

Prepare for your review

Bring previous prescriptions, investigation reports and your current medication list. Write down when symptoms began and how they affect your daily life. Ask which changes to monitor and when to return for review.

When to seek prompt help

Seek emergency care for a first seizure, one lasting more than five minutes, or repeated seizures without recovery.
