Dementia describes a group of symptoms associated with declining brain function. It is not the same as occasional forgetfulness. Different conditions can affect memory.
Persistent memory problems, difficulty with familiar tasks, language changes or altered behaviour may warrant assessment.
Assessment considers daily functioning, medical history and medicines. A family member’s observations may help; cognitive testing and selected investigations can clarify the cause.
Care depends on the diagnosis and may include medicines, practical support, routines and caregiver guidance.
Bring previous prescriptions, investigation reports and your current medication list. Write down when symptoms began and how they affect your daily life. Ask which changes to monitor and when to return for review.
Sudden confusion developing over hours or days needs prompt assessment rather than waiting for a routine memory appointment.
